How to Date on a Restricted Diet: Part 1

When I was diagnosed with two chronic illnesses I was as single as can be! Starting an extremely restricted diet terrified me, as I was 24 and a huge part of my social life revolved around food and bars. I wish at the time I had someone to tell me that I would be fine, that AIP/diet compliant dates are possible and are more often than not much better than typical dates!

Before I begin I wanted to list some of the positive things about dating while having a restricted diet.

1. You save a TON of money! Going to restaurants and bars can really add up. Cooking at home means you save money.
2. Cooking with a potential significant other is an amazing way to test a relationship.
3. Active/activity dates are an excellent way to get to know someone and offers something to do when things might get quiet.
4. Having first dates be sober dates are a great way to check compatibility. If you aren’t comfortable together sober, it’s not meant to be.
5. Restricted diets are an easy weed out mechanism. If someone can’t be with you because your health prevents you from eating certain things they are not meant to be!

And now for what you all have been waiting for! My top 5 diet compliant dates for the summer/early autumn!

1. Go on a picnic!
Nothing is better than being able to bond over delicious picnic food in a scenic spot. Look for your favorite city spot and enjoy! If it’s the first date, ensure it’s a public area.

2. Meet at a Café and then go on a walk/urban hike!
Meet at a café and get some tea/water and then go explore your town and city. Take a seat on a good bench and enjoy the people watching/views/sunset.

3. Go to a local landmark/museum.
I love exploring Pikes Place Market and all of the Seattle Landmarks. There are many things that you can do for free in your own city but if you want to spend some money feel free to check out local aquariums/zoos/science centers.

4. Go to a concert!
If you have the same taste in music have your first date be going to a local concert! Start with something small and pick a band that you both haven’t heard before. You can bond over how great or terrible it was! Finish the night at a bar if you want and order yourself a soda water and lime! You earned it.

5. Go to a Play/Musical!
Why do I choose to go to a play/musical over a movie date? Because you have more opportunities to talk to each other and bond during a plays intermission than the entire time at a movie. Find one of your city/towns local theater production companies and enjoy! Nothing like giving back to hard-working locals and enjoying an entertaining show while doing so!
