Quick Homemade Hot Cocoa

It is the dreaded midterm week at the University of Washington and I have spent hours upon hours toiling away at my studies. If you are a college student or you know a college student you know that a true study session is not complete without yummy treats to go with it! My study treat of choice is a delicious rich and creamy hot cocoa. Considering the situation, I found myself constantly craving hot chocolate as I studied for both of my tests this week. However, I did not have any time to go to the grocery store and I had run out of my cocoa stash far too soon! This is where my new recipe comes in to save the day. As you might know majority of cocoa recipes require powdered milk. I don’t know about you, but powdered milk is definitely not something I usually keep in my pantry, so I had to experiment a recipe without the powdered milk. The perk of using my recipe is you can have a delicious dairy free hot cocoa!

Easy Quick Homemade Hot Cocoa

Quick Homemade Hot Cocoa

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 3 minutes

Cocoa Mix:

¾ cup of Cocoa Powder

1 ½ cup of brown sugar

1/8 teaspoon of salt

Hot Cocoa Drink Ingredients:

1 ½ cup milk

–          For dairy free option try a nice almond milk/soy milk/ even coconut milk!

1-2 tablespoons of cocoa mix (depending on desired richness)

Measuring cups (¼  cup)

Canning Jar or Tupperware container with lid.

  1. Combine ingredients into your container. Close lid and shake container until fully mixed.
  2. Once mixed heat up milk in your microwave. I usually microwave my almond milk for about sixty seconds. If you’re concerned try doing 30 second intervals and stirring in between microwaving to prevent film from setting on top.
  3. When your milk is at the desired temperature for your cocoa add your cocoa mix. Stir until dissolved.
  4. Enjoy!

Hot Cocoa Tips:

  •  Your mix might form clumps over time, if this happens have no fear! As long as you thoroughly mixed the mix initially the clumps should dissolve easily in your cocoa.
  •  Want to kick it up a notch? Add shaved chocolate to your mix! It will melt and increase the richness of your cocoa
  •  My favorite way to prepare my cocoa is to cut marshmallows before placing them on top. Once marshmallows are cut and placed into the cocoa I microwave for 15 seconds. Make sure your cocoa doesn’t bubble over the top! You end up with Ooey Gooey Marshmallows!
  •  Another way to wow guests when you serve the cocoa is to make a fresh whipped cream to top. To make whipped cream add ¼ cup of heavy whipping cream with ½ tablespoon of sugar in a bowl and use whisk/hand mixer to whip it up. Place dollops on top of the cocoa.
  • Quick tip: If you have a magic bullet or mini blender throw cream and sugar into the blender and blend away until it is at the right consistency. BEWARE: if you blend too much you will end up with butter!
  •  To really mix the cocoa perfectly, mix it in a blender! You end up with a nice frothy cocoa!
